Alarm over intrusion of cows into runways of Kaduna airport

“The Minister of Aviation, Princess Stella Adaeze Oduah is expected to erect a fence to ward off the animals.” 

An alarm has been raised over the dangers posed to aircraft by hordes of cows that stray unto the runways and airside of Kaduna Airport on daily basis.

The alarm was raised yesterday by the Assistant Secretary General of Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON),Alhaji Mohammed Tukur during an interview problems facing members of the body on daily reports received from their pilots and ground staff at the airport as regards intrusion of animals,especially cows, goats and rams.

He said that the earlier the Minister of Aviation,Princess Stella Adaeze Oduah step in and ensure that perimeter fence was erected to ward off the animals the better so as to avert air disaster, nothing that,”the situation at Kaduna Airport is a disaster in waiting if the authorities refuse to rise up to the menace”.

Apart from reports from member airlines, he disclosed that he personally experienced on Saturday when the pilot of the flight he boarded could not land having encountered hordes of cows  on the runway and the pilot had to hover for several minutes to allow the animals to get out of the air field before initiating final descent.

Lamenting the dangers posed by this animals, Alhaji Tukur noted that airline operators have suffered tremendously from constant loss of aircraft engines due to bird strikes causing them millions of Naira to replace and or repair and to now have a feasible danger of straying cows on the runways and do nothing amounted to courting disaster.
