Anambra warns against fake drugs, others

THE Anambra State government has warned against dealing in counterfeit drugs and wholesome processed foods as offenders risk arrest and prosecution.

After a stakeholders’ meeting held in Awka yesterday, the Chairman, Task Force on Fake/Counterfeit Drugs and Wholesome Processed Foods in Anambra State, Alphosus Mmuogbo, told journalists that government set up the body in response to the national trend in improving consumers’ protection.

He said the state task force, inaugurated on March 8, 2012, was charged with, among others, the overall responsibility of seizing any drug or poison displayed for sale on any premises not duly licensed or registered.

It also has the powers to take samples of any article and examine it while on the premises, as well as to seal up premises used in connection with such items.  Mmuogbo disclosed that the task force had held meetings with all stakeholders including doctors, pharmacists, laboratory scientists, drug and cosmetics dealers, adding that the body warned on the consequences of dealing in fake drugs and wholesome processed food items.
