As 10,000-Seated Church Collapsed In Kogi, Five People Injured

The Immaculate Catholic Cathedral Church in Lokoja, the Kogi state capital, that was under construction has collapsed on Thursday, June 11, and no fewer than five people were injured.

According to the Punch, the Cathedral Administrator, Rev. Anthony Akande, confirmer the accident saying that no lives were lost as the workers were on break.

Rev. Akande said a team of visiting engineers from Abuja, last week, gave a pass mark to the work already carried out. The project was also supervised by eight engineers.

He described the collapse of the building as unfortunate and surprising matter.

The Punch reports that the Kogi state deputy governor, Mr Yomi Awoniyi, who was at the site of the accident, ordered that further work on the project be stopped pending the submission of report by the committee set up by government to establish the cause of the collapse.

Mr Awoniyi said there are several possible causes of the collapse, which would be unraveled at the end of the committee report.

According to him, the building collapse could have been caused by several factors,

Awoniyi urged the committee to speed up investigation. He also sympathised with the injured victims and the church.
