Benin monarch bans use of coffin for protest

AS residents prepare to stay away from work over the recent fuel subsidy removal, the Benin monarch, Omo N’Oba Erediauwa, yesterday warned protesters in the state to desist from carrying coffin along the streets during demonstrations, as this is against the customs of the land.

The protesters had last Thursday carried a coffin draped in Nigeria’s national colours.

But a statement by Secretary to the Benin Traditional Council, Frank Irabor, disclosed: “The Omo N’Oba said it is against our tradition and, therefore, a taboo which must not be allowed to repeat itself”.

While wishing Nigerians a happy New Year, Omo N’Oba advised protesters to employ peaceful means to resolve the issue at stake.

Meanwhile, hundreds of northerners have continued to transit from some southern states through Benin City to the North, apparently fleeing the areas for fear of reappraisal attacks on them following recent killing of Christians in the North.
