Brazil football legend Zico intends to run for FIFA presidency after admitting that the corruption crisis in the sport’s governing body has saddened him.

The 62-year-old ex-footballer, whose full name is Arthur Antunes Coimbra, stressed that it was his “duty” to run for this position.

The BBC reports that Zico announced his decision at a crowded press conference at a football skills centre he runs in Rio de Janerio.

“It’s sad for our sport to see what is happening in football today – the corruption… and the hard work of many other good people wasted – and I see it as my duty to use my experience and knowledge to try and stand for the presidency,” he said.

“Of course, changes in the rules of the game would be necessary. Mainly because, with the rules in place now there isn’t the slightest possibility (of being elected),” he added.

The former Flamengo player criticized the long tenure of Blatter and his predecessor Brazilian Joao Havelange.

“I am 62 years old and I only remember two presidents of FIFA, Joao Havelange and Blatter. Only these two people in the world to rule over football? This is unacceptable,” he stressed.

It would be recalled that the former FIFA president Sepp Blatter announced his resignation just four days after being re-elected. It came after United States and Swiss authorities launched corruption probes into FIFA.

On June 10, FIFA said that its executive committee would meet next month to choose an election date. All 209 FIFA member federations will vote for a new president, with the current favorite being Michel Platini, the head of Europe’s governing body UEFA.

Although Zico has played and managed in many countries around the world, he has little experience in football administration.

The legendary footballer is regarded one of the greatest players in Brazil’s history. During his career he appeared at three World Cup finals with the national side, in 1978, 1982 and 1986.

He also won 12 titles with Flamengo before starting a coaching career.
