Breaking News: Gunmen abduct Edo ex-Speaker’s wife

GOVERNOR Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State yesterday tasked security agencies on the rising wave of criminal activities in the state.

This came on the heels of reported abduction of the wife of former Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Fidelia Omokhodion.

Mrs. Omokhodion was said to have been kidnapped by gunmen along Sapele Road on Tuesday evening on her way from the office.

As at the time of filing this report, no contact has been made with her family.

Oshiomhole gave the charge at Government House, Benin City when he presented 10 Pick-Up Hilux trucks to the state’s joint security outfit, “Operation Thunderstorm.”

He assured that the state government would continue to support security agencies in the state in their fights against violent crimes like armed robbery and kidnapping.

The governor commended the leadership of the Armed Forces and State Security Services (SSS) for their efforts, saying: “The prevailing security challenges is not due to lack of efforts. We have about 400 suspected kidnappers at various stages of prosecution in the courts who did not surrender but were apprehended. The struggle against these criminals must not stop; it must be sustained.”

Oshiomhole added: “The primary purpose of government is to protect lives and properties. If you build schools, roads and provide other social amenities and people are unsafe, they will not use the facilities and efforts at bettering the lives of the citizens will be meaningless.

“But we are ready to complement the efforts of the security agencies and the Federal Government to make Edo State safe for all those who live and who pass through here.”

The governor, however, enjoined the leadership of security agencies to maintain the vehicles, assuring that his administration would do more for them by way of support.

In his response, Commander, 4th Brigade, Nigerian Army, Brig.-Gen. Abel Umahi urged the public to furnish security agencies with useful information on crimes and criminals.
