Chief Olanipekun donates N10million for Ibadan flood disaster relief

IBADAN — Pro-Chancellor and the Chairman of the Governing Council of the University of Ibadan, Chief Wole Olanipekun, SAN has donated N10 million to reduce the effect of the flood disaster that wrecked havoc in Ibadan two weeks ago.

Olanipekun said with the magnitude of the destruction caused by the flooding, the institution should not be ignored to carry the burden alone.

Apart from the donation, he promised sending a letter to President Goodluck Jonathan to ask him to do something to help the university.

With the enormity of the effects of the disaster, he felt the institution “deserves special intervention, not because of its being the premier university, but because of the extent of damage caused by the flood.”

Vice Chancellor of the premier institution, Prof. Isaac Adewole had estimated the loss the institution incurred at over N10billion adding that it was not possible for the citadel of learning to bear it alone.

Olanipekun said: ”As an academic environment, we must go a shade higher by laying good environmental plan that if such a thing should happen in the future, we won’t be counting losses as we are doing presently, but, we will be able to look back and say, when it happened some years ago, we recorded so much losses”.

The current unfortunate incident, he added, was a sad reminder of a similar one that happened in 1980 during the tenure of the late Chief Bola Ige.

He said, “it is lamentable that we are counting loses the way we did then and that is what we should prevent and as an institution, we are going to show the way. We are going to plan for the future, plan against the future, plan mitigation against similar future occurrence. We will start preparation by taking appropriate action, not to continually mourn loses, not to continually recount loses, we will build some fortress around us”.
