Erosion: NEMA urges Edo govt to relocate Etsako community

EDO STATE — National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, has called on Edo State Government to relocate erosion-risk community in Etsako West Local Government Area to avoid further loss of lives and property.

It noted that plans had been concluded for experts to undertake comprehen-sive investigation and assessment of the problem.

Director-General of NEMA, Alhaji Muhammad Sani-Sidi gave the advice in Abuja, at a stakeholders meeting to mitigate the impact of gully erosion in Etsako council, that had consumed many houses within Auchi community.

He said: “The gully erosion has so far claimed 20 lives and displaced more than 300 persons, and destroyed property worth millions of naira.”

He noted that NEMA as coordinating agency had sent experts to undertake comprehensive investigation and assessment of the problem to assist the different agencies/ministries to take necessary actions.

Sani-Sidi added that the team from NEMA observed that the gully sites were about nine years old.

The NEMA boss urged the immediate relocation of the people and planting of trees such as bamboo and cashew along the gully sites.

Speaking at the event, the Chairman of Etsako Council, Dr. Bruno Oshionebo, admitted the existence of the problem in the area and called for the agencies, especially Federal Ministry of Work and Environment and NEMA to come to their rescue.
