Federal Government Adopts New Measures To End Fuel Scarcity

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has promised to improve the production of petroleum products in the country before the end of the month.

The refineries are currently undergoing rehabilitation in Port Harcourt in order to speed up the process of the production of crude oil within the country.

The Group Managing Director NNPC, Dr. Joseph Dawha disclosed after an inspection that they are undertaking new strategies in carrying out the turnaround and appropriate maintenance of these refineries.

According to Punch, Joseph explained that the Port Harcourt refinery will be ready at the end of the month.

He said: “the Port Harcourt refinery, which has reached an advanced stage will start receiving crude by end of this month; and then, of course, will start contributing to the availability of products in the country.”

NNPC owns four refineries, one in Kaduna and Warri and then two in Port Harcourt. About 445,000 barrels daily capacity has been installed in these refineries.

Mr. Haruna Momoh Managing Director, Pipelines Marketing Company, also disclosed that, NNPC has been importing 50 percent of petroleum products into the country.

“Upon the completion of the ongoing rehabilitation and turnaround maintenance of the Port Harcourt refinery in July, the plant would run at 80 percent of its installed capacity and produce five million liters of petrol on a daily basis.” he added.

The Group Managing Director however called on marketers to embark on the importation of the Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) in order for fuel the scarcity to be curbed nationwide.

Nigeria is just recovering from the recent fuel scarcity that rocked the country for weeks. This development affected, organizations, telecommunications, the banking and aviation sector, to mention a few.
