Four Lagos civil service members remanded in prison over N106 million Naira theft

Four members of the Lagos State civil service were yesterday ordered to be remanded in Kirikiri Prison by an Ikeja Magistrate Court after they were arraigned over allegation of stealing over N106 million belonging to the government by forging some government salary scale documents.

The accused persons, Bashorun Kamar (39), Momoh Adewale (34) Attahir Olaosebikan (43) and Salami Rasaq(45) were ordered to be remanded in custody by Magistrate Olufemi Isaacs after the court dismissed their bail applications.

The office of the state Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP) which arraigned them had vehemently opposed their bail applications filed by their lawyer, Mr Kehinde Ogundare.

The DPP represented by Mr. Femi Adamson prayed the court to refuse the bail pending the time they will be formally brought before the High Court that has jurisdiction to hear their matter. He argued that the accused persons were said to have conspired to commit the offence and that some of them are yet to be brought before the court.

Adams prayed the court to remand them pending the outcome of the DPP’s advice.

They were arraigned before the Magistrates’ court on a six-count charge bothering on conspiracy to commit felony to wit forgery and stealing.

It was further alleged that the accused persons with others now at large perpetrated the fraud between the month of May 2010 and December 2010 at the State Secretariat, Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos.

They were alleged to have forged the Lagos State Government Staff Salary Scale which they used in stealing a total sum of N106, 291,000 from the coffers of the government and that the issue became known after a periodic audit.

The four civil servants were also accused of falsifying the Lagos State Accounts documents and “knowingly permitted false entries to be made in the account records” in contravention to Sections 390, 438, 467,477 and 516 of the Criminal Code cap C17. Vol.2, Law of Lagos State of Nigeria 2003.

The matter has been adjourned till October 3, 2011.
