Govt partners Israel on emergency medical services

FOR effective emergency preparedness and disaster management, the Federal Government has agreed with Israel on an Emergency Medical Service (EMS) in Nigeria towards capacity and structural development.

The partnership, aimed at reducing maternal, infant, accident and disaster mortality rate in the country, will focus on emergency medical preparedness and response; mass casualty incident management; trauma care and disaster management.

In a statement yesterday in Abuja by team leader and Director, Emergency Preparedness, Ministry of Health, Dr. Abdurrarazaq Gbadamosi, he said Nigeria has already sent a team of medical doctors for training to Tel Aviv, Israel.

He said the two-week skill acquisition training was made up of Nigerian doctors nominated from the teaching hospitals in Gwagwalada, Abuja, Jos and Maiduguri.

In addition, the director said the workshop would help to expose participants in developing basic emergency, occupational and environmental hazard protocols and frill preparedness doctrine for the training, which commenced on February 18 to March 2, 2012.

The delegates will interact with Israeli emergency healthcare institutional framework, process, content and policies’ implementation concerning emergency medical service guidelines and protocols.

The delegates will also understudy the school of paramedics; ambulance dispatch centres and ambulance service network, pre-hospital emergency medical equipment, disaster and emergency preparedness, national and local trauma system for adoption in Nigeria, utilising the public-private partnership model operating in Israeli healthcare and life-support industry.

Gbadamosi said the Health Ministry, through selected tertiary institutions, would initiate emergency healthcare procedures, programmes and projects for the sustainability of emergency medical service in Nigeria and its integration into all organisations of healthcare service in the health sector.
