ICPC arrests WAEC supervisors, invigilators for exam malpractice

ABUJA –  The Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission, ICPC, has arrested some top officials of the West African Examination Council, WAEC, and General Certificate of Education, GCE, following their involvement in examination malpratices.

The arrest of the WAEC/GCE supervisors and invigilators in Ogun state was facilitated by information provided by the National Anti-Corruption Volunteer Corps, NAVC, a unit under the ICPC.

The ICPC spokesman Mr. Folu Olamiti who confirmed the incident in a statement issued yesterday in Abuja said the Commission would not relent until the menace of examination malpractices in Nigeria is finally nipped in the bud, even as the suspects are still in detention at the Police Headquarters, Abeokuta, Ogun State.

He explained that the NAVC following a tip off had intercepted a WAEC/GCE supervisor and three invigilators at the Anglican Comprehensive High School, Ikoto, Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State in the course of extorting money from candidates writing the on-going WAEC/GCE examinations

The State Coordinator of NAVC, Mr Idris Abu, said he received a tip-off from students that in their centre, the suspected culprits asked all students to pay N500:00 to get assistance meant to make each of them obtain good results at once this year.

The NAVC co-coordinator reported that he subsequently directed the Ijebu_Ode NAVC Local Government Chapter Coordinator, Otunba Funso Ogunleye, to plant his officers at the suspected Examination centres to verify the allegations levelled against WAEC/GCE top officials.

It was rather from the marked examination centre that the vigilant NAVC filed reports that the WAEC officials had truly started collecting money  from desperate students, stating that the monies so far collected were wrapped in paper with the names and numbers of students attached.

The NAVC coordinator further reported that he had to direct his men on the ground to  inform ICPC operatives who swung into action and four of the WAEC/GCE officials were eventually apprehended.

Those so far arrested, according to the coordinator include, Mr. Sodipe Taiwo Mr. Adebisi A. Y. Mrs. Adekoya Taiwo Ronke and Mr Salami O. S, who were intercepted with various amount on each of them and names of students with examination numbers.

The four suspects had however been taken to Ijebu-Ode Police Station following a directive from the Head Of ICPC, Oyo and Ogun State offices, Mr Olusesan Olukile, an indication that investigations on the issue had commenced.
