ICPC Wants Nigerians To Join Anti-graft War

The Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) has called on Nigerians to see corruption as a national emergency requiring the inputs of all citizens for it to be surmounted.

These observations were contained in an address by the acting chairman of the commission, Mr. Ekpo Nta, during the opening of a five-day seminar in Uyo, the Akwa IBom State, tagged, ‘Repositioning the ICPC as a Foremost Agency in the Anti-Corruption Crusade.’

“Corruption has destroyed our national and communal life. In the light of this, every Nigerian should appreciate the problem as a national emergency and we must take responsibility and proprietorship of the crusade rather than assuming it as the prerogative of the federal government to check corruption and related vices,” he said.

A statement yesterday by the commission’s Resident Media Consultant, Folu Olamiti,  indicated that the ICPC boss wanted Nigerians to jettison their nonchalant attitude towards the vice, and that rather than sit on the fence, all Nigerians must accept the responsibility to fight the social malaise to a standstill.

“Taking a ‘Sidon look’ posture to this hydra-headed monster will not lead us anywhere, just as thinking that it is only the federal government that should fight corruption is a wrong perception. All hands should be on deck to check corruption and related vices.”

He observed that though a lot of seminars and workshops have centred on corruption in the country, what was essential at this stage was the political will and courage to bring offenders to justice.
