Lagos orders buses off illegal parks

THE Lagos State government yesterday warned all commercial buses operating within Ikorodu and its environs to move to the designated bus park  at Sabo or face the wrath of the law.

General Manager, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Babatunde Edu, said all commercial buses operating within Ikorodu and its environs, especially those loading and discharging passengers indiscriminately at the town’s roundabout, have been given a 48-hour ultimatum to move to the designated bus park  at Sabo.

Edu spoke at a meeting jointly organised by the agency and the Lagos State Task Force on Environmental and other Special Offences for the two recognised unions in the state – the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and the Road Transport Employers’ Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) at the Task Force Office, Alausa, Ikeja.

He stressed that commercial bus operators were also fond of flouting traffic rules and regulations.

The directive, he added, became necessary so as to curb the excesses of the commercial bus drivers and street urchins who have narrowed the road to carry out their illegal acts, thereby causing traffic hold-up and posing a serious security threat to the people.

He warned that officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) would not hesitate to impound any vehicle found to have contravened the directive.

Edu warned that violators would be charged to court and made to pay fines if found guilty.
