Lagos residents besiege banks, markets

WORRIED residents of Lagos State yesterday besieged banks to use their Automatic Teller Machine (ATM) cards to withdraw cash and headed for the markets to stock up foodstuff preparatory for today’s strike.

Also, some filling stations in the state shut their premises to motorists, creating long queues at others, which opened for business.

A resident, Mr. Ebere Ibe, told The Guardian at Alaba Market that he went to withdraw money to buy a bag of rice and other food items for the purpose of the strike.

He added: “Although the prices are high, I have to buy them because I do not know when the strike will end”.

At Daleko Market, Mushin, a trader, Mrs. Bisi Jumai, said: “I don’t sell on Sundays, but I know people will be out to buy things in preparation for the strike. That is why I am here”.

At a filling station in Ijora-Badia, Ijora, Bisi Alabi said she has been driving round town to buy petrol with no result.
