Nigeria asks Gaddafi to quit

“The federal government recognises the Libyan rebel National Transition Council.”

The federal government has recognised the Libyan rebel National Transition Council as the Libya’s legitimate government and called on Muammar Gaddafi to quit.

“In the last 48 hours, the situation in the country has moved inexorably closer to its denouement,” a Foreign Affairs Ministry statement said.

“The federal government is understandably anxious to prevent further loss of lives in Libya and therefore urges Muammar Gaddafi to take the part of honour and relinquish power immediately and allow the people of Libya to decide the future of their country.”

Several other countries, including Russia and China – Gaddafi’s strongest allies – have since Sunday night’s rebel invasion of Tripoli openly declared their support for the rebel led National Transition Council.
