Obanya heads WAEC

A FOREMOST Nigerian educationist, Prof. Pius Augustine Ike Obanya, was at the weekend named the new chairman of the Governing Board of the West African Examination Council (WAEC), succeeding Sierra-Leone-born Jonas Redwood Sawyerr.

Similarly, in line with the WAEC tradition that every host country produces the Vice chairmanship position, Nigeria’s Mrs. Mabel Ozumba, Director Basic and Secondary Education at the Federal Ministry of Education, was also named the vice chairman of the Council.

The two appointments were announced in Abuja at the weekend to round off the activities marking the 60th anniversary of WAEC. Obanya, the 17th chairman of the council who took over from Sawyerr, was recommended by the Nigerian government before his election and proclamation by the council.
