OPINION: The Real Intentions of Bukola Saraki In The Senate

Editor’s note: Naij.com guest author Ini Akpan Morgan tries to reveal the real intentions of Bukola Saraki in the Senate following his “desperate need to take over the Senate presidency”.

The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of Naij.com.

Story highlights:

– “I will never trust the intentions of the new Senate president, though it really does not matter now”.

– “Nigeria is really going very crazy. Will the Senate minority leader come from the APC, or maybe the PDP in the APC clothing will take it all?”

– “Nevertheless, Saraki and his senators must understand that the Nigerian law does not exempt any of them from prosecution”.

Fellow Nigerians! The 8th Senate members have demonstrated how they intend to cut short the life of the Nigerian 5th democratic administration by a sectional collaboration of the “like birds”, which must always flock together.

These Senate members have displayed indifference to the contributions the president and the APC leaders would make during the period of administration, and their intention is now pretty clear. They have indicated how they would undermine national cohesion and entrench their intentions to press against the people’s yearnings to see a new and egalitarian Nigeria.

I will never trust the intentions of the new Senate president, though it really does not matter now. I don’t believe that this desperate need to take over the Senate presidency is not for the purpose of forcing President Buhari’s war against corruption to be selective, if not truncated.

I hereby congratulate the president of the clearly divided Senate, Senator Abubakar Bukola Saraki, on his reserved ascension to the position of the chairman of the National Assembly by a partial consensus. It was a simple majority, no doubt, but I still wonder how 52 other colleagues of his will felt about the arm-twisting decision they took. What happened was a web of intrigues spun by very troublesome desperadoes. This is why none of them remembered that the APC, as the majority party, deserved to produce the Senate leader and his deputy. Nigeria is really going very crazy. Will the Senate minority leader come from the APC, or maybe the PDP in the APC clothing will take it all?

Those 52 senators deserve their own opinions within the red chamber. Calling them party renegades and pretenders for being good party men is natural now. It defines what Nigerians should expect from the new Senate set up by the enemies of Nigeria, those who abhor change.

Nevertheless, Saraki and his senators must understand that the Nigerian law does not exempt any of them from prosecution. The majority of those voting for President Buhari did so because he promised to fight corruption. This is what we are expecting of him even if it means prosecuting “our” Senate president.

Saraki should not let it come into his heart that he can convince my president to scuttle his war against corruption. I cannot imagine how Nigerians will react to any attempt he and his gang of PDP senators may make to impeach Buhari for his people-oriented initiatives. It will be a curious spectacle.

I hereby congratulate Honorable Yakubu Dogara, our new speaker of the House of Representatives. I also congratulate the members of the House of Representatives for showing unparalleled maturity in their affairs. If only I can see the whole National Assembly as I see them, but, fortunately, I am highly opinionated on the matter.

Unfortunately, President Buhari’s weakness is obvious now, and his job is more challenging than it should be. I now pity him more than I love him. His road is very rough, but I wish him Goodluck as much as I wish him Azikiwe.

However, it is now clear how the southwest has been used and dumped by the entire north. That was all about Tinibu-phobia. Now I know that the Muslim ticket was deliberately used against his emergence as vice president. President Buhari sold him out by calling out faithful party men to meet him and leaving them in cold. But Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu is a never-say-die politician. He absorbs betrayals kindly. I know him that much because I have met him once.

In the next four years, the south will be playing second fiddle to the north, but that is good for us. Maybe we will now hear Mujahid Asari Dokubu’s lonely voice from the south demanding us to ask out from the deceit called Nigeria.

As a citizen I will expect the National Assembly to give a good thought to Section 16 of the Constitution dealing with how the Nigerian resources should be apportioned to all citizens.

They should also pay attention to Articles 31 and 32 of the Third Schedule in conjunction with Section 84 and 124 of the Constitution, which clearly set how some Nigerians, less than 10% of our population, benefit massively from our Commonwealth leaving the rest of us in poverty, deprivation and wicked abandon.

I hereby protest the establishment of the Revenue Mobilization Allocation and Fiscal Commission as a vehicle conveying 80% of our wealth to less than 10% of categorised Nigerians. No national revenue distribution index anywhere on earth permits such economic imposition on a federated and free people.

I challenge the 8th National Assembly to either expunge Section 16 from the Constitution or review Articles 31 and 32 of the Third Schedule, and Sections 84 and 124 of the Constitution to make it compliant with Section 16 with immediate effect.

Otherwise, I am already studying the provisions and mandate of the International Criminal Court, and I would love to ask them if I as a private citizen can question these provisions before the court. And I swear I will do this.

Enough of a handful of people using the heads of over 160 million Nigerians as their dining table. I will fight the elites on the side of the Nigerian people. An ordinary Nigerian has suffered for too long, and he deserves some leverage and succour. It’s time to make this happen.
