Protests Rock Rivers As Wike Moves To Sack L.G.A Chairmen

There are growing tensions in Rivers State as rumours in the media suggests that the governor of the state, Nyesome Wike has plans to sack the newly-sworn in local government chairmen.

The chairmen who were elected in an election that was hurriedly conducted by the the immediate past administration in the state, after the general elections, was won by the All Progressives Congress in all the local government areas.

Earlier today, supporters of the local government chairmen went round the streets of the state capital, Port Harcourt, in a procession, carrying placards and chanting songs to express their grievances over the alleged plans of the governor. Some of the council chairmen joined the protesters.

The Chairman of Ahoda west LGA, Samuel Eyiba told SaharaReporters that  “Any attempt to dissolve elected Chairmen and Councilors of 23 LGA in Rivers State, [will be resisted by] the good people of Rivers State.”

Also Celestine Akpo Bari, Chairman of Khana LGA, said “we would not allow any attempt to truncate democracy and subvert the will of the people.”

Wike, recently relieved the state’s Independent Electoral Commission Chairman (RSIEC), Prof. Augustin Ahiaozu, of his duties.

The governor also dissolved the members of the state’s Judiciary Service Commission (JSC) and sacked its secretary.

Meanwhile, the Rivers state governor has appointed the immediate past minister of state for trade and investment under former president, Goodluck Jonathan as secretary to the Rivers State government.
