Reps order police to probe ABSU gang rape

“The lawmakers demand that the IGP unearth the perpetrators of the gang rape.”

The House of Representatives has directed the Inspector General of Police, Hafiz Ringim, to immediately investigate the rape of a girl purportedly by four Abia State University students.

The House resolution is the second high level government intervention, after that of the Minister of Youth, since the news and videos of the rape hit the Internet, sparking outrage with calls for the perpetrators to be brought to justice.

The university authorities and the Abia State Government have insisted the incident did not occur at the school, while the Abia State Police Command has claimed investigations cannot commence since the victim has failed to file a report.

The lawmakers unanimously condemned the abuse in a motion tabled by Abike Dabiri-Erewa (Lagos ACN), and as mandated its joint committee on Justice, Human Rights and Women Affairs to investigate the matter and report to the chamber in two weeks.

Describing the rape as barbaric, Dabiri-Erewa, in an emotion-laden voice, detailed the account of the encounter which she said was based on clip sent to her by a blogger. “This is a debasement of womanhood,” she said.

Also condemning the development, Nasiru Ali Ahmed and Babatunde Adejaye, called for the immediate apprehension of the culprits and warned the relevant authorities not to create the impression that there were no laws in the country.

Another member, Christina Alaaga, decried the frailty of the country’s laws on rape and urged the House to come up with a stronger legislation that would adequately address the vice they said was becoming rampant.

“The law on rape should be revisited so as to curtail the rising incidence of the crime in the country,” he said. “The issue is strictly within the domain of the state and the police. And the House should not be brought into it.”
