The Senate President Bukola Saraki has been attending to official matters from his home in the Maitama area of the Federal Capital Territory since he was elected Chairman of 8th National Assembly on June 9 because his N27.1bn official residence is said to be under construction.
The residence of the former principal officers were sold off in 2010 at a discount rate by former President Obasanjo’s administration under his monetisation programme.
According to The Punch, Saraki’s residence at Lake Chad Avenue was on Friday like a mecca of sort as politicians were seen trooping and out of the building. This could be unconnected to the emergence of Saraki’s as the number third man of Nigeria.
It was observed that aside of large number of vehicles in the area; hawkers were seen as they were displaying their wares on the road in an area that used to be exclusives of the high and mighty.
Speaking on sales of official residence, a legal expert, Simon Ayede, said that the sale of the official homes by the Federal Government was unconstitutional.
He said,“there is a subsisting Federal Government gazette that certain official residences should not be sold.”
Ayede opined that the gazette listed some of the official quarters that should not be sold to include, the Presidential Villa, the Senate President House, that of his deputy, House of the Speaker of the House of Representatives and that of his deputy.
He therefore called on President Muhammadu Buhari to reverse the sales of the official residence of the principal officers because it could be renovated for the current officers even at less expensive amount.
Meanwhile, Saraki in his inaugural speech pledged to work for the interest of the original Nigerians as he will championed a smooth executive-legislature relationship.
