Saraki Reacts To Controversy Trailing His Election

Few minutes after he was sworn-in as Senate President, Senator Bukola Saraki reacted to the controversy trailing his emergence as speaker.

Sahara Reporters report that Senator Saraki saluted President Buhari for remaining “steadfast” in his defense of the right of the National Assembly to choose its own leaders “I am most honoured and privileged to be elected to serve as President of the Senate. I accept with humility and respect the honour you have conferred upon me today,” Saraki told members of the media.

Saraki who extolled the uncommon leadership of the former President of the Senate, David Mark, in the last eight years also sought the cooperation of the senators “May the future generation of citizens look upon the 8th National Assembly as a true assembly of our people’s representatives who did their best in the service of our nation’’ he declared.

Senator Saraki became the Senate President of the eight assembly under a controversial circumstance. Out of 108 senators expected at the chamber, the election took place with 57 senators in attendance.

The election took place while other APC senators were attending a crucial meeting with party leaders, including President Buhari and Vice President Osinbajo, to broker peace between factions competing for leadership positions in the National Assembly.

Meanwhile, the emergence of Senator Saraki has triggered mixed reactions. While some analysts see Saraki as a traitor for going against the position of his party, others feel it is a welcome development.

The People Democratic Party applauded the emergence of Saraki, Dogara as Senate President and House Speaker,  but in contrary APC sees it as  ‘Totally Unacceptable’.
