Senate Presidency: Mixed Reactions Trail Lawan’s Emergence As APC Candidate
The emergence of Senator Ahmed Lawan of Yobe state as the All Progressives Congress candidate for the position of the Senate president has been greeted with joy and disbelief at the same time.
It would be recalled that the APC which has 59 senators in the 109-member Senate, held a mock election for the purpose of choosing the party’s candidate for the June 9th election of the Senate president and the deputy.
After the election that took place at the International Conference Centre, Abuja, last night, Senator Ahmed Lawan of Yobe state was nominated for the position of the Senate president, while Senator George Akume, Benue state, was selected as his running mate.
However, reactions have trickled in following the absence of Senator Saraki, who is Lawan’s main challenger for the seat, during the voting process.
Naij.com gathered reactions from Nigerians on twitter, see below;
Lawan is going nowhere..He might end up winning the battle but obviously he will lose the war. SARAKI still has PDP cheering him behind.

I wouldnt trust a pdp defector ahead of an APC root member. Im sure alot of that must have influenced the Lawan decision @APCNigeria — ỌBA ADEDAPO (@DeeSwagZee) June 7, 2015
@APCNigeria we need Ahmed Lawan The common voice for the people. Let’s give him a chance. He can do it. Let the other one go for recess

@APCNigeria We need a man without any stain of corruption to complement PMB. Lawan all the way. Let the other one clear his name first. — AbdulBasit Muhammad (@M_Abdulbasit) June 7, 2015
I believe if justice and fair play would be applied to the election process, Senator Ahmed Lawan would take the mantle of Senate presidency.

@fizylicious the way PMB won on twitter Bukola Saraki would also win on Tuesday. What do you mean by more principled? @fizylicious?

APC has now set itself up for embarrassment on Tuesday. Because Saraki might very well still win.”

Saraki is bright. You can’t take that from him…

Unlike Senator Ahmed Lawan who became a senator in 2007, Senator Bukola Saraki was elected in the April 2011 elections, having previously served two terms in office as governor of Kwara State.
