Senate Presidency: Mixed Reactions Trail Lawan’s Emergence As APC Candidate

The emergence of Senator Ahmed Lawan of Yobe state as the All Progressives Congress candidate for the position of the Senate president has been greeted with joy and disbelief at the same time.

It would be recalled that the APC which has 59 senators in the 109-member Senate, held a mock election for the purpose of choosing the party’s candidate for the June 9th election of the Senate president and the deputy.

After the election that took place at the International Conference Centre, Abuja, last night, Senator Ahmed Lawan of Yobe state was nominated for the position of the Senate president, while Senator George Akume, Benue state, was selected as his running mate.

Lawan beats Saraki

However, reactions have trickled in following the absence of Senator Saraki, who is Lawan’s main challenger for the seat, during the voting process.

Unlike Senator Ahmed Lawan who became a senator in 2007, Senator Bukola Saraki was elected in the April 2011 elections, having previously served two terms in office as governor of Kwara State.
