Sheikh Gumi Gives His Opinion On President Buhari’s New Administration

The well-known Islamic scholar, Sheikh Ahmed Gumi, in an interview with Sahara Reporters has given his opinion on President Muhammadu Buhari’s government.

He said: “We hope that President Buhari will conduct himself in the most amicable manner to drive this nation to safety.”

The scholar also gave his position on how Nigerians should combat the Boko Haram insurgency.

Sheikh Gumi was critical of the way Nigerians have thought about the issue: “The North is not ready to hear the truth.”

He suggested that Muslims in the country do not know who their enemy really is. He believes that if Northerners can recognise the ones who are killing them, they can crush Boko Haram.

“We Muslims need to face the fact that some of us are killing some of us. Being a military man, he will stand up to see that he defeats Boko Haram. The fundamentalists may now feel more invigorated to fight till the end. There’s a chance that there may be more violence than before,” said Gumi.

The scholar also expressed appreciation for ex-president Goodluck Jonathan’s behaviour during the polls.

“President has showed a lot of statesmanship by conducting one of the fairest elections in the country, and then peacefully seceding to the winner. We are happy that things turned out peacefully.”

Sheikh also had important views on what kind of leadership he considers is required to lead Nigeria out of its present difficulties.

“Leadership entails a lot of things, it’s not just about being honest, you need flexibility and other qualities, sometimes you have to be a fool to be a leader. Even the support Buhari got from the south is because they want him to do something drastic, drastic moves always backfire. Nigeria can’t take a drastic move, it needs a gradual process of getting there,” he said.

Recently the All Progressives Congress has praised Buhari for seeking help from neighbouring countries in the war against the Boko Haram insurgency.

The party noted that Buhari should be commended rather than punished for his efforts.
