Suspected thief jumps to death

POLICE authorities in Kwara State yesterday confirmed that a body recovered from Asa River, Ilorin, yesterday was the remains of a suspected motorcycle thief who jumped into the river in the course of a hot pursuit by a mob recently.
According to the Kwara Police Spokesman, Assistant Superintendent Dabo Ezekiel, it was “a case of nemesis catching up with a thief”.
Ilorin residents woke up yesterday to discover the swollen body of the suspected thief on the Ibrahim Taiwo Bridge.
The putrid smell of the body made many passers-by to desert the road for several hours before the police eventually evacuated it at about 1.00 p.m.
Witnesses claimed that the suspect stole a motorbike at Unity Road and tried to escape with it but a mob went after him on about five motorcycles.
“When he saw that he had been rounded up, he jumped into the river and we waited for him to come out to no avail. Some people believed that he had disappeared via some magical acts, but today, we have seen the end of a thief”, said one witness.
