The Real Reason APC Accepted Saraki, Dogara’s Victory – Oyegun Opens Up

Chief John Odigie Oyegun, the national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has disclosed why the leadership of the party decided to accept the emergence of Bukola Saraki as the Senate president and Yakubu Dogara as the speaker of the House of Representatives.

The APC had initially opposed their victory, threatening to sanction them for going against the party.

Speaking to newsmen on June 15, Monday, Oyegun said the party had to recognise them as the winners and quickly reconcile its members so that the government will not be crippled, This Day reports.

He said: “All the party has decided to do is to reunify as quickly as possible our members in both chambers of the National Assembly under the existing realities. That is the first priority. Every other thing will follow suit.

“All other thing will have to wait. This is because, if for instance, the president says he wants to present his list of ministerial nominees to the Senate, we would not want a situation whereby the senate will be divided.”

According to the chairman, the APC was gradually mending the cracks in the party to prevent further intra-party squabbles.

He added that these setbacks had given the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) an opportunity to laugh, warning them not to take it for granted as it was temporary.

Addressing speculation that he was among those being considered to be the next secretary to the government of the federation in the new administration, Oyegun said: “I have not in anyway solicited for any position other than the national chairmanship of APC. I think I am clear enough, isn’t it? And nobody has approached me that he is considering me either for that position or another.”

On why President Muhammadu Buhari was yet to appoint ministers to the federal cabinet, the party chairman said the president was conducting a very thorough check on the background of the people he will appoint.

The APC has been in disarray after Saraki defeated Ahmed Lawan, the choice of the party, to clinch the Senate president post while Dogara defeated Femi Gbajabiamila for the post of the speaker of the House of Representatives.

After much disagreement, the party finally decided to accept the outcome of the elections.

Saraki has also reportedly started initiating peace moves with his colleagues and the leadership of the APC.
