UNILORIN VC Supports Indigenous Language For Teaching

THE Vice Chancellor of University of Ilorin, Professor Abdulganiyu Ambali has canvassed prompt resuscitation of the planned policy of the Federal Government to use indigenous languages as languages of instructions at the primary level of education in Nigeria.

Prof. Ambali who also spoke  on the Centre for International Studies of the University, observed that needed measures should be put in place to tackle some of the grey areas that the development could engender in he process, explained that the curriculum should be formulated to accommodate children and wards of civil servants who may be posted to places where they do not speak or understand the languages of their host communities.

In his words, “education using the indigenous language had been on for sometime. It will work if we give it a chance and be ready to make sacrifice. We have to device a Nigerian way of doing it.”

On the centre, he noted that the department which started with students population of five has at present risen to 2,000, adding that the centre has boosted the role of Nigeria as harbinger of peace to the rest of African countries.

He canvassed more of private supports for the University especially the investors who may wish to invest in hostel construction with the aim of profits making, adding “ours is a peaceful university a desire of any major investor.”
