University Workers Threaten To Go On Strike

University workers under the aegis of Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) have protested a supposed threat to privatize staff primary schools.

Daily Trust informs that the western zone of SSANU comprising universities in that axis staged a peaceful protests on Thursday.

The protest was in reaction to a March 5, 2015, circular allegedly issued by the Federal Ministry of Education to universities in the country to remove staff schools from workers payroll.

The move by the ministry if carried out means that the workers will have to pay the full tuition fees for their wards in the schools.

The protesters claimed the move to privatize the schools will remove workers who were already part of the University organ.

The workers called for Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Professor Julius Okojie to be sacked for overtime in office and threatened to shut down universities if the privatization move was accomplished.

SSANU Western Zone Vice President, Mr Alfred Jimoh addressing members of the organization in the University of Ilorin said: “anyone who dares us would have himself to blame.”

The VP warned that the 2009 agreement reached with the Federal Government should not be altered threatening that the association will protest any alterations.

Meanwhile, earlier this month, the University of Nigeria, Nsukka Campus, was closed for two weeks after students had protested power blackout and water scarcity.

Also the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has declared that 16 universities and other higher institutions established by the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan are illegal.
