A sixteen-year old girl, who managed to escape from Boko Haram captivity and return home, is now hated by heartless local villagers, who would be happy if she was dead.

The girl who told about her unending ordeal, wanted to remain anonymous out of fear of revenge.

A sixteen-year-old girl, abducted by Boko Haram militants half a year ago, managed to escape from captivity and come back home. But there she had to find out that now local villagers hate her, only because she was forced into marriage in captivity and was impregnated by Boko Haram “husband” she hated.

The girl, who wanted to remain anonymous out of fear of revenge, told the press that she was planning her escape from the moment she was abducted by Boko Haram militants, but managed to do that only after spending six months in captivity, when her captors’ vigilance began to slip.

However, when she got home, she found out that jihadists killed her father, and that local villagers now hate her because of her pregnancy.

A leader of local militia force, counteracting Boko Haram activities, told the press that “if any woman is found to be pregnant, in our tradition, the pregnancy is considered “haram”, or unlawful, hence we cannot accept them wholeheartedly because they can be like baby snakes.

Nevertheless, the girl refused to abort her baby, fearing of health risks.

We heard about one girl who died after she attempted an abortion, losing both the mother and the baby,” her mother told. “If God wishes, she [her daughter] will give birth safely. Life is in the hands of God alone.

The United Nations Populations Fund (UNFPA), said about 214 of the 687 women and girls so far rescued by the Nigerian Army from the dreaded Sambisa Forest in Borno State are at various stages of pregnancy.
