‘Why ABU was set up’

ABUAREWA leaders, former Head of Civil Service of the Federation, Mallam Adamu Fika and ex- Nigeria’s Permanent Representative at the United Nations (UN), Amb. Yusuf Maitama Sule have said that it was the quest for Nigeria’s unity that led the ex-Premier of the defunct Northern Region and Sardauna of Sokoto, the late Sir Ahmadu Bello to establish the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU).

According to them, it was the desire of the late premier that the products of the university that were harnessed from all parts of the country should be trained to uphold the unity and integrity of the country, as they urged them to continue to live up to the expectations and dreams of Sir Ahmadu Bello.

The admonition by Fika and Sule was on the heels of the  divisions among the political class and those fanning the embers of disunity in the country, saying that the dreams of all the founding fathers of the nation, including the late Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe and Obafemi Awolowo must not be allowed to die.

Fika, Sule and the Vice Chancellor of ABU, Zaria, Prof. Abdullahi Mustapha spoke at the weekend, at a public lecture on “the mission and vision of the founding fathers of ABU” and book presentation to mark the 50th anniversary of the institution.
