THE number of people inhabiting the world hits seven billion mark today, according to United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).
The UNFPA, at the weekend in Abuja, said the population growth was a challenge to the world, considering the most pressing human concerns that are transnational issues the world shares across race, religion and nationality.
Speaking on the significance of the milestone to Nigeria, the UNFPA Country Representative, Dr. Agathe Lawson, said all stakeholders must work together for the country to achieve its potential.
“Nigeria with a population of 166 million accounts for about 2.4 per cent of the world of seven billion people. To fully utilise the potential of the population, we all should work together and take action to reduce poverty, ensure access to reproductive health, rights, empower women and young people as essential components of the human capital development of the country,” she said.
