Government develops new vehicle registration portal to check car theft
To help owners in times of theft, the federal government has opened a new web based portal for vehicle registration.
The portal, which was recently officially unveiled in Abuja, is a brainchild of the National Automotive Council (NAC) and is designed as platform for the collection of automotive data in Nigeria.
Director in charge of Planning and Policy at the National Automotive Council, who spoke at the presentation of the platform in Abuja, stressed that the portal was developed in consultation with the Nigeria Police, Federal Road Safety Commission, Federal Inland Revenue Service and the Joint Tax Board, the 22 state government motor vehicle administrative offices, automotive sector of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN), Nigerian Automotive Manufacturers Association.
He said: “A special section for registration of individual vehicle license particulars. This is a secure platform that will generate a unique code for vehicle owners so that there can be no double registration nationwide.
“This site is also available to states for use in the vehicle licensing if desired as it will save them cost of developing only statewide platform which cannot detect out of state registration.”
The date, he added, is useful for planning while it helps owners in case of vehicle theft.
“Given the observed limitation, the council examined the option of developing a secured platform on the World Wide Web for online by all stakeholders at their own convenience. The platform configuration and content was developed between November 2006 and 2011 in consultation with several agencies.”
“This portal presents as a truly national platform for vehicles registered in Nigeria, It can also help to support security cameras for traffic light offenders nationwide as long as vehicle is registered on the platform,” he added.
