Mass failure in NECO exams, national embarrassment- Anyaoku

Former Secretary-General of the Commonwealth of Nations, Chief Emeka Anyaoku, has described the mass failure in the recent NECO examinations as a national embarrassment.

Consequently, he said governments at all levels in the country should be held accountable for the development.

Anyaoku, who spoke at the grand finale of the 50th anniversary celebrations of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, charged governments to accord greater attention to education by raising the quality of teachers and facilities.

He noted that though it was not easy to meet with UNESCO’s standard, the governments must be seen to be making progress in that difection.

Anyaoku said the nation’s universities must contribute to national development by producing quality men and women and must focus on research to advance the cause of the country.

He further charged them to look inwards towards exploring the enormous natural resources for the development of the country and urged the UNN to lead in the effort.
