NASS Crisis: Abdulsalami Panel Faults Saraki’s Election

The Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar-led National Peace Committee has faulted the election of Senate President Bukola Saraki and that of the Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu, on the grounds that the process did not confirm to the standard of morals and value expected of the highest legislative body.

The National Peace Committee 2015 played a pivotal role in ensuring peaceful elections

The tussle for the leadership of the Senate ended in a dramatic fashion on June 9, Tuesday, when Saraki was elected unopposed as president of 8th Senate by 57 of 108 senators, with 51 senators, absent. A victory that has been described by some political pundits as a tactical coup.

According to The Nation, the Peace committee in a statement released yesterday, June 16, indicted the process leading to the elections of the principal officers in the Senate.

It said: “Even the most optimistic of us did not imagine that we would be where we are today in our country. Up till the last elections, the atmosphere after every election since 1999 has been poisoned by endless quarrels among political elite, long drawn out appeals at Tribunals and occasional violence leading to loss of lives. Happily, this has not been the case since the last elections.”

The committee berated members of the Legislative body for not showing respect and appreciation for the privilege given to them to serve the country at that level.

It said Nigerians knew that last week elections in the Senate was not done properly, adding that given the maturity, track record and experience of the body, it wondered why a routine process should turn into an ugly, selfish dogfight.

However, the committee commended the House of Representatives who successfully concluded their elections in a befitting manner.

It advised the All Progressives Congress (APC) to resolve the current disagreement in the party without bringing it to the public.

It urged the APC not to relent on its promise of change, reminding the party of the high confidence Nigerians have in them.
