NIGERIA: Father, Son In Court For Alleged Burglary
The police in Lagos on Monday arraigned a father and his son for allegedly burgling the apartment of one Issac Akpan and stealing items worth N175,000.
The accused, Wilson Eka, 60, and his son, Anietie Ekanem, 28, are facing a three-count charge of conspiracy, burglary and stealing before the Somolu Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.
They, however, pleaded not guilty and were each granted bail in the sum of N100, 000 with two sureties in like sum.
The prosecutor, ASP Akinlabe Adegoke, said that the duo allegedly stole one refrigerator, a television set, a standing fan and a DVD player from Akpan’s apartment.
He added that the accused also stole the cash sum of N100, 000 on Sept. 15, 2011, from Akpan’s house at No. 1, Humani St., Somolu, Lagos.
He said that Eka of No. 18, Agati St., Fadeyi, was the caretaker to the complainant’s apartment, where Ekanem was also living.
Adegoke said that the first accused, Eka, had given Akpan a quit notice before they allegedly broke into the complainant’s apartment.
“Without waiting for the quit notice to expire, the accused went and broke into the house and packed out Akpan’s luggage without his consent.
“When the complainant came, he discovered that the missing items were no longer among the properties he left inside his apartment,’’ he said.
Adegoke said that the alleged offences contravened Sections 278, 305 and 409 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State.
Magistrate Bola Osunsanmi adjourned the case till May 6 for substantive trial.
