Super Eagles Depart For Peru
The Super Eagles, yesterday finally departed for Lima, Peru for an international friendly match scheduled for Wednesday, after their flight was cancelled on Saturday night following the discovery of a drug courier on board. The team is expected to arrive in Lima this evening. The friendly is part of an integrated programme to prepare the team for the 2014 FIFA World Cup and 2013 African Nations Cup qualifying matches coming up next month.
Similarly, today, the U-20 Men’s Team, Flying Eagles, will travel to Cape Town, South Africa for an Eight-Nation Invitational Tournament that will also welcome Argentina, Brazil, Cameroon, Ghana, Japan, Kenya and the host nation.
The tournament, for which Nigeria is defending champion after winning the inaugural event in 2010, is meant to grill the new team being prepared by Coach John Obuh for the qualification series of next year’s African Youth Championship. Nigeria is reigning African champion.
The Flying Eagles clash with Tanzania in the second round of qualifying series in July, with the first leg away in Dar es Salaam.
Tomorrow, in Abuja, Super Falcons’ Head Coach, Kadiri Ikhana will unveil his team for the African Women Championship qualifying fixture against Zimbabwe in Harare. It is the only fixture the Falcons, who are also reigning champions of Africa have to go through before qualification for this year’s African Women Championship in Equatorial Guinea.
The Falcons will fly out of Nigeria on Wednesday for the first leg coming up in Harare on May 26.
