CAN faults northern govs’ decisions

THE northern chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has criticised the Northern Governors’ Forum for allegedly taking some decisions on behalf of the people of the 19 states of the North.

According to CAN, the governors, who are mainly political leaders, often goof on issues that affect the minority and Christian faithful in that part of the country.

The Christian body, therefore, warned against the continuation of the trend in order to stop the prevalent sectarian crises in the region that have led to incalculable human and economic losses in the last few months.

The CAN spoke through its Assistant General Secretary, Rev. Cornelius Fawenu, in Ilorin, Kwara State capital, yesterday.

Describing the existing generation of the people from the Middle Belt and those generally referred to as minority as wiser than their forebears, Fawenu said the era when the minority could be used to score cheap political points was over.

He said: “The North is at the risk of being plunged into more sectarian crises except its leadership, represented by Northern Governors’ Forum, learn to engage relevant stakeholders before they declare official positions on sensitive national issues.”
