NBC, OGTV differ over Internet broadcast

THE National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) is currently locked in a dispute with the Ogun State Television (OGTV) in a dispute over the station’s streaming its transmission on the Internet.

The station’s transmission on the web since November last year has given it a worldwide coverage, which has been well commended.

But the management of the NBC has ordered the station to “immediately cease the screaming on the web”.

A letter by the Commission’s Director-General, Mark Ojiah, dated February 21, 2012, to the station’s General Manager, Ayinde Soaga, stated: “I am directed to convey the Commission’s disapproval of the unilateral commencement of the streaming of OGTV’s signal on the web without the approval of the Commission”.

“To this end, you are directed to immediately cease the streaming on the web and apply to the Commission for the required approval”.

But Soaga expressed surprise about the development, saying that he had informed NBC as far back as last November that the station had begun streaming on the web.

“So why are they now writing such a letter to us, four months after informing them?”, he asked.
