FG restates commitment to education-for-all by 2015

THE Federal Government is committed to achieving the goals of Education-for-All (EFA) by 2015 to ensure the nation’s accelerated development.
Minister of State for Education, Nyesom Wike, disclosed this in Paris, France, during an interactive session with the international media, according to a statement by his Media Aide, Simeon Nwakaudu, in Abuja on Tuesday.

Wike, who is attending the 36th Conference of United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) in Paris, told the international correspondents covering the conference that President Goodluck Jonathan’s Transformation Agenda has laid out programmes to ensure access to quality education for less privileged Nigerians.

His words: “For us in Nigeria, we are working hard to attain EFA goals by 2015. Our President and the Federal Ministry of Education are committed to enhancing quality access to education in our country”.

He said the government had in the past five months given priority attention to the development of infrastructure for girl-child education, the almajiri, nomadic and children of fishermen in schools and the strengthening of the capacity of teachers.
“Our commitment to addressing the challenges of education is borne out of the desire to develop a highly literate society that would eliminate growing insecurity and poverty through an enhanced capacity for our people”, he added.

Wike added that the Federal Government would continue to liaise with UNESCO and other international development partners to improve the standard of education in Nigeria.

He said the rot in the education sector took root over the years, pointing out that positive outcomes of President Jonathan’s investment in education will take time to manifest.
