Health minister performs surgery

MINISTER of Health, Professor Onyebuchi Chukwu at the weekend rolled up his sleeves, removed his traditional cap and put on medical costume as he joined Indian doctors to perform corrective surgery on polio victims in Gwagwalada, Abuja.

About 400 polio victims have been screened and would undergo corrective surgeries through the support of Rotary International in the next 10 days.

Chukwu, who joined the 26 Indian doctors at the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, relived the joys of the duties and responsibilities of a doctor in medical situations.

The minister, an orthopedic surgeon, arrived at the teaching hospital at about 3.p,m and was welcomed by the team of India and Nigerian doctors who were involved in the Rotary Corrective Polio Project. Immediately he arrived, one of the India doctors ushered in him, announcing:  “The theatre is ready, the patient is ready, and everything is ready for your operation.”

Chukwu was cheered by his entourage as he appeared moments later from the theatre dressed in surgical garments and announced that the operation was successful.
