How Osun State Government Plans To Mark June 12

The Osun state government has declared tomorrow, June 12, as public holiday to mark the annulled June 12, 1993 elections won by Moshood Kashimawo Abiola.

The  state government in a statement on Thursday, June 11, said it was declaring Friday as a public holiday to pay tribute to MKO Abiola who was one of the symbols of Nigerian Democracy.

“Nigerians should reflect ‎on the significance of the June 12, the sacrifice made by Abiola so as for all of us to come together to cultivate, consolidate and protect the current democratic experiment.” the statement read in part, The Nation Reports

Governor Aregbesola said that June 12 played a critical role in the development of free and fair elections in the country.

He noted that the 1993, June 12 elections was the first time that Nigerians united to vote for a candidate of their choice irrespective of ethnic affiliations or religion.

Chief MKO Abiola who was adjudged the winner of the 1993 elections is celebrated in Nigeria and internationally on June 12. The said date remains a public holiday in Lagos, Ogun states and other western states.
