JUST IN: Court Denies Fraudulent CBN Staff Bail

Justice Nathaniel Ayo Emmanuel of the Federal High Court today, 15th June dismissed the bail application filed by six former staff of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN)

The accused persons are: Patience Okoro Eye, Afolabi Olufemi Johnson, Ilori Adekunle Sunday Kolawole Babalola, Olaniran Muniru Adeola and Fatai Adedokun Yusuf.

The six are being prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for more than N8billion currency fraud.

Justice Emmanuel in giving his reason for dismissing their bail application explained that although the interest of the accused was worth considering,  the interest of the society was however more paramount. He further made it clear that the gravity of their offense was too serious to be treated with levity.

The judge in dismissing their application also delivered another blow to the accused by stating that he wanted an accelerated hearing and would not allow frivolous applications.

The six accused who were once top officials of the apex bank were arraigned on June 2 on a 28 count charge of fraud and stealing. They were said to have conspired with some private banks to defraud the country.

The judge adjourned the case till July 6 and 7 for trial.

Recently, The Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) said that top officials of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) plotted with officials of some private banks to defraud the country of about N8 billion.
