Lagos seeks compliance with safety laws

AHEAD of the Yuletide period, the Lagos State government has called for compliance with safety standards during and beyond the Yuletide season, saying it will no longer condone flagrant disregard to safety laws.

According to the Director General, Lagos State Safety Commission, Mrs. Odebunmi Dominga, all on-going building projects will be subjected to inspection with immediate effect to ensure compliance with the safety laws.

According to her, any structure that collapses will be thoroughly investigated and may be pulled down by the State Emergency Agency/ Lagos State Physical Planning and Development Authority (LASPHYDA).

Dominga, who said construction sites would be inspected unannounced for safety compliance, noted that personal protective equipment such as hats, hard toe boots, protective goggles and gloves are to be worn at construction sites always.

While enjoining organisations to train officers on risk assessment, she revealed that scaffolding must be inspected and secured to prevent dislodging while proper safety policies will be put in place at the work place.

She reiterated her commission’s determination to dealing with those who flout the safety laws of the state.
