Maku assures Nigerians in U.S. of govt’s commitment to transform economy

MAKUMINISTER of Information, Mr. Labaran Maku, has assured the Nigerian community in the United States (U.S.) of the commitment of President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration to transform the nation’s economy through sustained reforms.

He reiterated President Jonathan’s commitment to stabilise power supply through the ongoing reforms in the sector as well as complete 10 new power plants under construction.

Speaking at a street parade to mark Nigeria’s 52nd independence anniversary in New York at the weekend, the minister said progress is being recorded in the rehabilitation of the railways, which completely collapsed for over two decades before President Jonathan assumed power, adding that in the shortest possible time, Nigerians will once again be able to travel by rail from Lagos all the way to Kano.   He disclosed that work is ongoing on the rehabilitation of the Port Harcourt to Maiduguri rail line.

Maku noted that government is very focused and is evolving security measures to tackle violence in some states in the northern part of the country and called on Nigerians to unite across ethnic, religious and cultural differences.

He assured Nigerians in the United States of President Jonathan’s commitment to deepening ongoing electoral reforms to consolidate on the impressive achievements in the country in 2011.

According to a statement by the Press Secretary to the Minister, Mr. Joseph Mutah, the event was witnessed by thousands of Nigerians in the U.S.
