Nigeria gets silver at Copa Coca-Cola African International Tournament

The Copa Coca-Cola Nigerian Dream Team put up a spirited battle at the final match of the Copa Coca-Cola African International Tournament played in London.

Playing “Team Mikel”, the boys squared up gallantly against “Team Drogba” (comprising Zambia, Namibia and Lesotho) but lost their quest for the gold trophy in a 2-0 defeat.

The two day football tournament featured 74 young boys from across ten African countries. The boys were split into five teams: Team Drogba – Zambia, Namibia and Lesotho, Team Kalou – Zimbabwe and Swaziland, Team Mikel – Nigeria, Team Essien – Malawi and Team Maluda – Algeria, Mauritus and Madagascar.

Team Mikel, popularly referred to as the “Nigerian scoring machine”, earned their way to the final against Team Drogba by scoring the highest number of goals (14) in the tournament.

The final match was full of excitement as the boys played with all their might, with the defense line of Team Drogba proving impossible to penetrate.

“Our boys excelled in all aspects of the game –skill, zeal and performance, displaying the true spirit of Nigerian youth. Despite the outcome of the tournament, we are proud of this outing and the fact that they showed great potential and drew commendation from some of the tournament officials and the spectators,” said Femi Adelusi, the Project Manager of Copa Coca-Cola in Nigeria.
