Ondo distributes 1.6m insecticidal nets

NO fewer than 1.6 million free Long Lasting Insecticidal Nets (LLINs) are being distributed to all households in Ondo State by the Olusegun Mimiko government.

Wife of the governor, Mrs. Olukemi Mimiko, while speaking at her investiture as the Net Ambassador of the state in Akure, lamented that malaria remains a deadly and dreadful disease that requires a systemic and combative effort to wrestle.

She noted that over 90 per cent of the population in Nigeria was at the risk of having the disease which “is responsible for over 66 per cent of clinical attendance in our hospital and remains the commonest cause of absenteeism from offices, farms, schools, markets, among others”.

“Malaria is also responsible for over 30 per cent of childhood mortality and 11 per cent maternal mortality rate”, she said.

Mrs. Mimiko urged the beneficiaries of the insecticidal nets to air it under the shade for 24 hours before hanging and sleeping inside it and commended the Federal Ministry of Health, the RBM partners, especially the DFID and Ondo State Ministry of Health for the honour bestowed on her.
