Strike Disrupted the Second Semester Exams at the University of Ibadan, Nigeria

The final semester of the academic year (second semester) was disrupted at the university of Ibadan as a result of a strike by members of SSANU – Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, NASU – Non Academic Staff Union and NAAT – National Association of Academic Technologists over non – implementation of the 2009 agreements by the federal government of Nigeria. A similar reason that caused the previous 1 week warning strike by ASUU.

Members of the various unions arrived at the school early and blocked the entrances of the university as a result prevented the staff and students of the university from getting into their offices and classrooms on time. Due to this occurrence, there was a long queue of vehicles trying to get into the university of Ibadan.

All local transport systems were stopped while students, staff, and visitors were forced to walk to their various destinations by foot.
Some lecturers tried to teach but were driven out of the university.

All these events disrupted traffic flow on Mokola-Ojoo road.

Speaking with Nigeria newsmen, the chairman of the unions, Mr Oyelade Oyesola (NAAT), Mr Omolona Jonathan (SSANU) and Fatoki Olusola (NASU), said they were on strike because the federal government of Nigeria had failed to fully implement the 2009 agreements which included 65yrs as retirement age for the workers.

While noting that the government had had meetings with representatives of the unions, they claimed that such meetings did not achieve the desired result.

According to them, in most cases, such meetings ended in a deadlock.
