Three Reasons Why Buhari Is Still Hesitating With Naming SGF

President Muhammadu Buhari is trying to avoid pressure choosing among four candidates for the post of Secretary to the Government of the Federation. He has three issues to resolve to choose the right candidate.

Rotimi Amaechi, Ogbonnaya Onu, John Odigie-Oyegun and Babagana Kingibe.

Four main rivals in the race for the post of SGF – Rotimi Amaechi, Ogbonnaya Onu, John Odigie-Oyegun and Babagana Kingibe. The latter is said to be the favourite.

Position of the Secretary to the Government is soon to be filled but it is still not known yet who is about to take this important post. There are four main rivals in the race for the post of SGF  – Rotimi Amaechi, Ogbonnaya Onu, John Odigie-Oyegun and  Babagana Kingibe.

The main problem of choice for Buhari is to appoint a person, who wouldn’t repeat mistakes of his predecessor, turning the office into “ethnic enclave”. Another important question is observing geopolitical balance in this appointment. While Rotimi Amaechi represents south-south, and Ogbonnaya Onu represents southeast, John Odigie-Oyegun represents western Edo state, and Babagana Kingibe is hailing from Borno state in the northeast.

The geopolitical balance in power looks like this for now: Buhari represents northwest, vice-president – southwest, Senate president – north-central, deputy president of the Senate – south-east, the speaker of the House of Representatives – north-east and the deputy speaker of the House of Reps – south-west. As can be seen, only south-south is not represented yet neither in executive nor in legislatives branches of power.

Nevertheless, the top source in presidential entourage who declined to be identified, told the press that “the delay in appointing the SGF is borne out of the fact that the President has left it open for the consideration of many eligible Nigerians irrespective of geopolitical zones.

On other words, it seems that the principle of zoning wouldn’t be of much importance for Buhari while choosing SGF.

The third important factor which Buhari should consider thoroughly is whether the new SGF should be a vibrant politician or an experienced bureaucrat.

While some people in the presidential entourage support Rotimi Amaechi because he complies with the requirements of geopolitical balance in the appointments and is representing a type of young and vibrant politician, other think that he may be not the best candidacy to fill this position due to his temperament.

Analysts also point out that APC national chairman John Odigie-Oyegun is either unlikely candidate to fill this position after recent catastrophe experienced by the ruling APC party during the election of the Senate President.

Opinions about most likely next SGF for now divided between ex-Governor Ogbonnaya Onu and Babagana Kingibe, Buhari’s long-time personal friend. Despite the fact that old age andpriciple of geo-political balance are working against the latter candidate, it was learnt that Muhammad Buhari said to be appreciating Kingibe’s contribution to his presidential campaign. So this seasoned bureaucrat form north-eastern Borno state may be one of the most likely figures for the post of Secretary to the Government of the Federation.

Barely 72-hours after the former head of state, Muhammadu Buhari, was inaugurated as Nigeria’s president, the reports have emerged that he has appointed Ogbonaya Onu as the new Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF).

This detail was made public on May 31, 2015, Sunday, by the APC Situation room.

However, the popular twitter handle, @apcsituationrm, used to make the announcement became unavailable hours after the news went viral.

At the same time, Rotimi Amaechi is set to lose out of the race to emerge as the Secretary to the Federal Government as top chieftains of the All Progressives Congress (APC) are said not to be backing his ambition.

Many Nigerians also have reacted two weeks ago to the purported decision of President Muhammudu Buhari to appoint Ogbonaya Onu as the new Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF).
