UN agency restates commitment to Nigeria’s MDGs

THE Nigerian office of the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) has restated its commitment to the country’s attainment of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) through capacity-building and human development of young people.

Speaking with The Guardian at the weekend, Head/Resident Representative of UNITAR Nigeria, Dr. Larry Boms, said: “At the fulcrum of our activities is the MDGs, which nations have agreed upon to help propel global economic development and promote sustainable peace-building.

“In furtherance of our mission to help propel local development, UNITAR opened its Nigeria office in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on March 23, 2006; a decision necessitated by the desire to operate closer to the grassroots where actions are most needed.

“A few examples of our training programmes include specialised technical courses, which focus on capacity building of youths from the Niger Delta region to qualify them for direct employment in the oil and gas industry and other sectors where these skills are in demand”.
