Virginity test: Headteacher to undergo psychiatric test

The Headteacher of Ajuwon Senior High School in Ifo Local Government Area of Ogun State, who conducted virginity test on some female pupils last December, Mrs. Olufunke Aladeojebi, is to undergo psychiatric test to determine her mental state.

The state government gave the directive after considering the report of the three-man panel raised to look into the matter.

The panel is chaired by Alhaji Ambali Ishola, the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Education.

The panel recommended that Mrs. Aladeojebi should be relieved of her appointment, if found to be of unsound mind.

It said she should be demoted from Grade Level 16 to Grade Level 15 and recalled to the Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM) headquarters, if found to be sane.

The government also accepted the panel’s recommendation that the two health workers, who carried out the virginity tests, be referred to the Ministry of Health for sanction and redeployed from the school.

The affected pupils are to be referred to the State General Hospital for medical check-up and counselling.

The Commissioner for Education, Segun Odubela and the Chairman of the Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM), Bukunola Onabanjo, have been directed to meet with members of the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA), workers and pupils of the school to douse the tension generated by the issue.

Teachers, who have spent five years in the school are to be redeployed.

Commenting on the government’s decisions, Odubela said: “With these decisions, we have finally laid to rest the issue of Virginity Test in Ajuwon High School.

“The decisions addressed all the problems and affected persons. We hope we can all shift attention to the developmental projects that the state government is undertaking to provide affordable and qualitative education for our people.”
